Kinja'd!!!

So, at the end of last season the world was informed that F1 cars would be switching from the marvelous sounding 2.4l V8's to a 1.6l Turbo V6's. Now to those new to the F1 world, that might not sound particularly mad or insane, or even stupid. For those in the know and that want to experience the magnificence of the shrieking howl of a Formula 1 car again and again and again, you know that the switch has been quite a controversy. This is especially true after Renault, Mercedes, and Ferrari released teaser sound bites of the new engines revving and going through the gears. To put what comes next into perspective here is a clip from the last season's V8 medley.

But even that doesn't do it justice. I went to my first live race this year in Austin, and the sound literally assaulted me. I even had to put a restraining order against it...that I immediately dropped because I wanted to get assaulted again...and again. Here is my write !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

Now that you know what last seasons cars sound like with the outgoing V8's, here is what the manufacturer's served up as their " special teasers " of these brand new engines. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Frankly they sounded like supped up vacuum cleaners strung out after a wild bender with Courtney Love. They sounded terrible. Something that many, many auto journalists and fans bitched and moaned about throughout the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . That is until this week.

This week, F1 begin its pre-season testing at Jerez in Spain. It is shakedown for the teams to figure out whats wrong with the cars, and what needs to be changed in order for better performance and better reliability. I've also been covering this for the last !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and will finish up tomorrow with the final day of testing. Well during these tests we finally got a few clips that have made their way to the interwebs so as to actually hear these engines in racing spec and being rung out a bit on a track.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Not being at the track and being able to feel the onslaught that precedes these cars personally, I have high hopes. Going into this season with all the rule changes, all the car changes, the double points, as a fan, I was not at all that optimistic. Hearing the cars alleviates some of that tension and anxiety. Now, again these clips are still only from the first test session and the cars are not being pushed to the limits just yet. There is still time for major tweaks of engines, the turbos, the exhausts and a whole host of other aspects of the car that could change the sound. But for right now, they sound good, better than a vacuum cleaner. Sorry Roomba

First impression, that sounds like proper F1, has the feel of the banshee wail of the V10s with depth of V8s and its own character, and we haven't even seen its final form yet!

SAY WHAT !?

Listen to the Mercedes stall @ 29 sec.

OK OK OK , that was on a stall/shutdown...

BUT, at speed I bet they are limiting boost significantly due to the fuel flow limits placed on them... If anything, the turbos help in the midrange, but the wastegate(s) is(are) probably wide open at 15,000 RPM (running into fuel flow limit)

Seeing the Ferrari pushing it a bit, gives me loads more confidence for the coming season. That thing looks more "grounded to the ground' than a Camry.

I like that you can hear the turbo's and a slight blow off noise when they change gear (it means I can pretend I'm an F1 driver everyday now).

I really do miss the V10's though, man if you thought the V8's were an experience.

I wish I would have been able to hear those in person, even through speakers they sound amazing.

you need some pretty impressive speakers to get the right sound, you can feel the reverberations in the pit of your chest as they go past.

If you have a blocked nose it won't be after a GP either. everything comes out.

I'm with you, man.

Just wait.

Just wait until Australia and there's a grid full of these things at full song waiting for the lights to go out. (Imagine a grids-worth of Group B singing out loud) Hearing these creations whooshing and chirping and cracking and sneezing and snarling to be let loose. It's going to be Epic. Off-the-chart awesome. And better still, we have no idea who, or what's, going to do well. (Maybe a little bit now we have some testing)

We have McLaren professionally rule-bending, we have drama in the engine bays, we have controversial design. We have controversial rules, we have champions, we have rookies. We have turbos, we have new acronyms to learn, we have F1.

Let's get down to it and enjoy the sceptical!

I don't think any speakers can do it justice. I went thinking I knew what they would sound like, I was wrong, very very happily wrong. I can't wait till Austin this year.

Australia can't come soon enough, cars are going to start on fire, tires might explode, double points, new rules, Alonso and Kimi, hell just that alone will be worth the price of admission! I can't wait.

I watched Senna with my brother's band PA. Would recommend the experience to anyone. We got noise complaints. That was pretty close though I reckon.

I've just had my leave approved for Melbourne GP

I've heard a V10-powered F1 car in person. There is nothing else like it.

Only on the Renaults. The other engines (Ferrari, Mercedes) do not have wastegates as the MGU-H handles that instead.

One of my bucket list points is to go to the Goodwood Festival of Speed and just listen to all the classic F1 cars go up the hill.
